McKamey Manor: Inside America's Most Extreme Haunted House

Referred to by critics as a torture chamber, the McKamey Manor website claims the experience is the “next evolution in interactive survival horror theatre.” Each experience is tailored to the participant’s personal fears and can last 10 hours. The experience may involve abductions, assaults, and other terrors—all of which can lead to a number of injuries and even death. Every moment of the experience is said to be filmed, and it’s allegedly heavily edited to only show the parts online that wouldn’t put the operation at risk. Anyone who wants to participate has to meet a long list of requirements.

After that, all three were pulled to continue doing more "endurance" tests leading up to signing a 40-page waiver to participate in the interactive horror house. Gabi remembers the adrenaline and excitement leading up to signing the waiver, but being told she couldn't even look at the person who was holding the waiver. As far as admission goes, the experience originally only accepted dog food or funds for animal welfare as payment. The experience also used to offer a $20,000 prize for anyone who "finished it," but no one did. The prize was taken away because the owner told WKRN that he thought it was causing people to go through with the experience for the wrong reason.

McKamey Manor: Everything To Know About The Haunted House From Hulu's ‘Monster Inside’ Documentary

"I'm going to get inside your head, and that's what makes it scary," he says. "It's a very psychological experience that includes hypnosis, and once I hypnotize you, I can make you believe whatever I want. I can put you in a kiddie pool and tell you there's a great white shark in there, and you're going to freak out like there's a shark." There's no admission fee, though, other than a 50-pound (23-kilogram) bag of dog food. McKamey, an animal lover, says some of it goes to his five dogs, and the rest is donated to rescues.

“Extreme” haunted houses, which aim to terrorize through physical and psychological stress, are less common. They are often subject to fierce criticism, while thrill-seekers line up for the chance to be scared out of their minds. Most haunted house attractions take place in only one location, but McKamey Manor isn't like most haunted house attractions, and so its terror takes place across multiple cities — for a single experience. When moving from its original location in San Diego, California, to Tennessee, Russ McKamey decided to greatly expand its capabilities to push its visitors past their limits. The Southern California location largely took place in a house in a residential neighborhood, but the lower cost of living in Tennessee meant that McKamey could set the Manor on a large plot of land. But this is just the start of McKamey's system of picking ideal candidates for the house.

Interactive horror house or a torture chamber?

Each contestant’s entire journey through the manor is filmed, which McKamey says is to protect himself against false accusations. "There's got to be a reason why people keep coming back time and time again. Surely, they had a good time." "It's going to be, you know, bugs, spiders and cockroaches and snakes and that type of thing," he says. Also high on the list are "claustrophobia, water, the fear of drowning, heights. All the basic things that people are uneasy about are the things I use at the show."

One guest, Laura Hertz Brotherton, repeatedly used the safeword to no avail for several minutes and wound up hospitalized with extensive injuries. The entry fee is a bag of dog food, and McKamey claims anyone who can make it through will win $20,000. McKamey Manor has been around for years and has never awarded this prize to anyone. Skrmetti stated there were serious concerns about his “business practices” in the operation of the “extreme haunted attraction”. To experience McKamey Manor is, you have to be 21 and older, or 18 to 20 and have parents' approval.

What Is McKamey Manor, America's Most Extreme Haunted House?

The physical cost is cheap—all Russ asks for is a 50-pound bag of dog food that he donates to an animal shelter. As of Tuesday morning, more than 31,100 people had signed the petition. A Change.org petition calls on Tennessee and Alabama state officials to "shut down McKamey Manor," which it says is a "torture chamber under disguise."

YouTube videos taken of participants show them being covered in mud, dealing with heights, water and a whole mess of other critters and don't forget about the psychological aspect of participating ins something like this. If you are ready to live a horror film, McKamey Manor may be for you. The horror experience is only for those 21 years and older, and that is just the base of maybe being able to head into this frightful experience. Completed "Sports Physical" and  Doctors letter stating you are physically and  mentally cleared. But that still wasn't enough space for the showman; the current version takes place in three phases, starting in Summertown, then to Nashville, before crossing state lines into Huntsville, Alabama.

There is no time to talk to her because McKamey and a posse of balaclavas swoop, marching the prisoners from the car park to an isolated wooded copse with a pungent smell. "I'll be your best friend," Smith says of his relationship with contestants leading up to their tour date. "I'll be calling you, checking up, ... getting into your head to figure out what makes you tick."

He started his haunted house in San Diego before pulling up stakes and moving his operation to Tennessee. Russ McKamey first opened McKamey Manor on his property in San Diego in the early 2000s before relocating to Tennessee in 2017. Initially, the haunted house was a well-built and standard haunted attraction. However, McKamey allegedly seemed obsessed, causing him to take the fear factor to the next level with the immersive challenges the manor is known for today. “I’m a very straight-laced conservative guy, but here I run this crazy haunted house that people think is this torture factory, fetish factory. "It's literally just a kidnapping & torture house. Some people have had to seek professional psychiatric help and medical care for extensive injuries. I propose that all locations where this is happening be shut down immediately," he wrote.

While the admission fee is still a bag of dog food for McKamey’s pets, you could still walk away spending a couple thousand. According to The Washington Post, you must pay $500 each time you curse or fail an activity. Given the experience’s history and extent of torment, you’ll likely walk away spending more than a $20 bag of dog chow. Towery claims participants have been waterboarded, "forced to eat things" and have had duct tape wrapped around their heads.

The use of found footage and sound bites is sprinkled between the interviews of these participants. Hulu's recent documentary and a letter from the Tennessee Attorney General's office pointed out that McKamey Manor may take things just a bit too far when it comes to trying to bring the horror to life. The documentary's synopsis states that it follows McKamey and his horror ways, but it also looks at allegations of being a "manipulative abuser" by three people. McKamey's perchance for extreme horror has even caught the eye of Hulu. McKamey Manor is touted as a horror experience like no other and is not for the faint of heart...or anyone with a heart condition.

Of course, because McKamey Manor does pretty much everything it can to separate itself from the pack, it doesn't make money, operating instead as a nonprofit. Even with a purported 27,000-person waitlist, the experience doesn't take a single dollar from any participant. McKamey is possible the scariest haunted house in the entire country, and the owner, Russ, takes that title very seriously.

It’s so scary that no one has ever completed it — but if you do, you’ll win $20,000. "It's definitely a personalized survival horror experience," he says. "We find out a lot of information about an individual, with information we gather from them, from their friends and family, all kinds of sources. We find out what really makes them tick, and then we build a show around their fears and phobias." It's hard to imagine anyone having a good time during a tour of McKamey Manor, but there's an audience for everything.

Cruise ships: Things you probably didn't know you could do on board

During the special event, the first hull block was lowered into the building dock, and, for good luck, under the keel was placed a newly minted coin that features the Disney character Captain Minnie. The coin was placed by Philip Matthew Gennotte - Executive Manager of the subsidiary Walt Disney Imagineering (Germany) GmbH. DCL also announced that Captain Minnie will be part of the ship's hull artwork (at the bow). The pool deck has a large area for family fun water activities, featuring 2 whirlpools/hot tubs and 2 kids pools - "Donald's" (5 ft deep) and "Mickey's" (with a spiral slide). There's a toddler splash area (Nemo-themed) located in the center on Deck 11 with huge glass panes for parents to monitor their kids.

For the year just ending (2023), the line offered four such sailings, and it's offered even more than that in certain years. Alas, for the coming year (2024), Disney currently does not have a single Bermuda sailing scheduled — a bit of an anomaly. Disney has cut back on voyages out of San Diego for 2024, after increasing its San Diego departures sharply in 2023. But it still offers several trips to Mexico out of the city on Disney Wonder.

The woman and the cruise ship doctor were then hoisted onto the aircraft. A pregnant woman was taken off a Disney cruise ship on Monday via medevac after she experienced health complications. Many cruise lines, including Disney Cruise Lines, Carnival and Royal Caribbean, offer weddings and wedding renewals aboard the ship or at scenic tropical locations. But there are some lesser-known accommodations available on most cruise ships. DCL's announcement included that during the ship's naming ceremony, the Make-A-Wish children will recite the traditional blessings for the vessel.

On July 15, 2017, Disney Cruise Line/DCL officially announced the company's plans to build 3 new vessels in Germany, at Meyer Werft's Papenburg Shipyard. The so exciting for all Mickey Mouse fans announcement was made by Bob Chapek (Walt Disney Parks and Resorts company's Chairman). Follows the complete list of DCL Disney Wish lounges, clubs and other entertainment venues for kids, teens, and adults. AquaMouse is a family fun water attraction and another DCL fleet-first. Also new for the DCL fleet are the "quick food" bars "Marceline Market" and "Mickey and Friends Festival of Foods".

Concierge Staterooms (Most Expensive Main Category)

If you are on a ship that still charges by the amount of data used, we recommend not doing that and connecting either when you are in port or via a plan from your cellphone provider. Disney Cruise Line's Wi-Fi, Connect@Sea, is in the process of being upgraded, so speed, bandwidth and cost vary by ship. On Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, the teen club has its own set of small pools at the front of the ship. Technically, Edge is for kids ages 11-14, but you can get your 10-year-old in with permission — and once they figure that out, it's probably all over for the "little kid club."

Let’s investigate how to select the best staterooms on a Disney cruise for your family vacation. Similar to the transatlantic cruise, a South Pacific / transpacific cruise is primarily a repositioning cruise; sailings are typically nights in duration and will end in a completely different hemisphere than they started in. Expect an extensive number of days at sea in which the cruise simply sails without stopping at a port. A seven-night cruise in the Caribbean will likely start around $5,000 for a family of four. Expect Alaska and Europe cruises to start at $5,000 to $6,000 for inside cabins for a week, and prices go up for longer sailings and upgraded cabins.

If you want to be more active, head to your ship's sports deck to play basketball, foosball, miniature golf and more. You may even have some sports simulator options beyond your traditional in-person fun. If you like getting away to relax, look at purchasing access to the Rainforest Room for heated stone loungers, aromatherapy showers and even hot tubs on the larger ships. You can buy a one-day or full-cruise pass to this area of the spa, but get a tour first as the layout and inclusions in this space vary dramatically from ship to ship. The Senses Spa & Salon is a full-service spa with everything from massages to pedicures and hair care.

DCL's shipboard gratuities are now USD 14.50 per person per day (US$15.50 per Suite guest daily). Tips are generally given to waiting staff (including assistant waiters) and cabin attendants/stewards. Additionally, a 15% gratuity on all beverages is automatically charged to the passenger's shipboard account.

While pricey, Disney concierge service eliminates almost all of the potential pain points of a Disney cruise (not that there are many pain points to begin with). Be prepared for sticker shock, though, as these suites will almost certainly be near or over five figures on many sailings. If you are going all-out on a particular trip, or are simply working with a larger budget, Disney concierge suites are special. These cabins start at 169 square feet for a standard inside cabin and go up to a two-story, 1,966-square-foot Tower Suite on Disney Wish.

Disney cruises to more ports in Europe than any other location on the planet. Disney’s European cruises include specialty itineraries such as British Isles, Mediterranean, and others — all offering a diverse list of ports of call. To give an idea of the cost, a four-person family on a four-night cruise would pay $232 in recommended tips. The amount is split among your team of dining room servers who quickly learned your kids' preferences for dinner and your cabin hosts who made your room look like magic while you were out enjoying yourself. Inside all versions of the teen club, Vibe, you'll find a tech-friendly world with loungers, dance parties, smoothies and other teen-approved fun. Some of the coolest inside space on Disney cruise ships is dedicated to teens ages 14-17, but you can request for your child to attend this club starting at 13 years old.

At these restaurants, you can order whatever you want on the menu at no extra charge, with a few exceptions (for example, alcohol and specialty drinks cost extra). If you are on the fence about concierge service, it's arguably most valuable when you are on a shorter cruise, have some specific popular must-have items on your reservation wish list or want someone else to take care of everything. You can also inquire about discounted upgrades at the port, assuming rooms are left unsold on your voyage. You'll see many families with kids in those preschool, elementary and middle school years. This won't be an entire private island like Castaway Cay, but it will be an exclusive beachfront space designed for Disney Cruise Line with many similar offerings to Castaway.

Disney Fantasy and Disney Wish will operate the trips from Port Canaveral, while Disney Dream and Disney Magic will sail from Fort Lauderdale. The cruise line also regularly offers seven-night sailings out of Port Canaveral that visit Caribbean islands like St. Thomas and Tortola. This may influence which products we review and write about (and where those products appear on the site), but it in no way affects our recommendations or advice, which are grounded in thousands of hours of research. Our partners cannot pay us to guarantee favorable reviews of their products or services. According to the United States Coast Guard, a Jayhawk helicopter aircrew left a station in Miami to conduct a medevac for a Disney Fantasy cruise ship passenger who was traveling 180 miles northwest of Puerto Rico.

For families, the Concierge Family Oceanview Stateroom provides plenty of space and convenient access to all of the ship’s family-friendly amenities. The Disney Fantasy offers a year-round program of week-long itineraries to the Caribbean and the Bahamas. The cruises depart from Port Canaveral and visit several ports of call, such as Cozumel, George Town, St. Thomas and Castaway Cay. The Disney Wish continues to offer short cruises to the Bahamas sailing from Disney’s homeport in Port Canaveral.

A large walk-in closet provides plenty of space for storing your belongings. The Concierge 2-Story Royal Suite with Verandah on the Disney Wish cruise ship is a luxurious and spacious stateroom that spans two decks (decks 12 and 13). The Suite features a spiral staircase, two large bedrooms, three full bathrooms, a large dining and living area, and two large verandahs with a private hot tub. The Bahamian cruise is one of the most popular Disney Cruise itineraries for several reasons. First, most of these sailings depart from ports in Florida, making it easy to add a cruise onto an existing Disney World Vacation — great for folks taking a Disney Cruise for the first time. They also tend to be shorter cruises — usually three or four nights — making them ideal for those wanting to extend their land vacation or needing a shorter trip due to not having much time off of work.

Edge is a much smaller space, but tweens have tons of fun playing video games, having dance parties, doing crafts, playing trivia games and more with their newfound cruise friends. All five Disney ships have amazing spaces for kids in the 3-to-12-year-old range in the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab. As a parent, my favorite part of a Disney cruise might be the included kids programs that children actually want to attend. If the kids are happy for a few hours, the parents can actually relax, too. You can work off some of those treats and drinks at the onboard fitness center on each ship. Remy is a fancy adults-only French restaurant that costs $125 per person for dinner (more if you order drinks).

This Is the Best Time to Cruise to Alaska

best time alaska cruise

There are numerous factors you need to consider for a cruise to Alaska, including the best time of year, costs, itineraries, which line to choose and which destinations matter most to you. The good news is that no matter which month you choose, your Alaskan cruise will reward you with incredible experiences and memories that last a lifetime. As for land trips, June sees Denali National Park and Kenai Fjords National Park open, both of which offer stunning floatplane and flightseeing adventures. Alaskan railroad trips are also available, giving you access to interior hiking, cozy lodges and remote wildlife viewing.

Alaska Cruise Lines: From Holland America and Royal Caribbean to Small Ships like Silversea

There are exciting marine animals that you can see this early in the Alaskan springtime. "If actually spending time in Alaska is what you want to do, you're going to want to start further north," she said. If you'd like an assist with your outdoor adventures, the Mount Roberts Tramway climbs 1,800 feet above Juneau for gorgeous views. Those who'd prefer man-made experiences can check out honky-tonk at the raucous Red Dog Saloon or dip into any of the microbreweries and distilleries all over town.

The best month for an Alaska cruise: When to go

Here is a breakdown of other important considerations for an April Alaskan cruise. From month to month, the weather, wildlife, and your chances of viewing the mesmerizing Northern Lights vary greatly. While the most popular time to travel to Alaska on a cruise is June through August, it's also when it tends to be the most expensive.

Bug Spray Is a Must for Anyone on a Cruise to Alaska

Alaska offers something for everyone, with activities and experiences that appeal to all ages. Whether you want to hike in the wilderness, go whale watching, or learn about Alaska's history and culture, there is something for everyone. Additionally, May is an ideal time to take advantage of the extended daylight hours and enjoy some outdoor activities. Alaska is known for its outdoor adventure opportunities, and the springtime weather is perfect for hiking, fishing, and kayaking. You can take a guided hike through the wilderness or try your hand at fishing in one of Alaska's many rivers. When traveling from Vancouver in the Inside Passage of Southeast Alaska, the waters are mostly protected and provide smooth sailing.

If you’d like a small ship cruise to Alaska, but crave a bit more adventure, expedition cruises might be more your speed. Check out lines like Alaskan Dream Cruises, Lindblad and UnCruise Adventures, which focus on immersive nature and wildlife experiences. The vibe onboard these ships is also more personalized due to their limited capacity. You're in luck if you're hoping to see whales on your Alaska cruise, as the majority of the cruise season coincides with whale season. Humpback whales can be found in the waters of the Gulf of Alaska and are some of the most frequently spotted, though you may also see orcas and gray whales as well.

After the Summer Solstice in June, Alaska begins losing daylight with each passing day. While the days are still longer than those in the Lower 48, they are getting slightly shorter throughout July. They begin migrating from Hawaiian waters in the springtime to feed in the nutrient-rich Alaskan waters.

Advantages of Visiting Alaska in July

While it is impossible to see and do it all over the course of a one week cruise, Alaska has the power to enchant even brief visitors. So while you are stuck at home, this may be the perfect time to start planning a cruise to The Last Frontier. Stephanie Yrungaray grew up in gorgeous Eagle River, Alaska and now calls Utah her beUtahful home. She enjoys traveling and exploring with her husband and five kids any way she can, from cruising to RV camping and everything in-between! When she’s not out exploring, you’ll find her writing about travel, finances and parenting as well as gift ideas on her website,

You can also take advantage of the lower rates offered by the cruise lines during the shoulder season, which can help you save money. A September cruise has its benefits, including less crowding and cheaper prices. However, a cruise this time of year will also slightly decrease your chance of viewing wildlife and make for sleepier ports of call because most summer workers return home for college. Mid-June through late August is the busiest time for tourism in Alaska; this is when cruise ships are often booked to full capacity.

I stood there for what felt like forever, unable to take my eyes off the crumbling ice and the splash of the water below. While you might not be sunning yourself to a stunning shade of bronze on an Alaska cruise, you and everyone on board will want to take in the scenery. That makes having your own balcony a prime piece of real estate, especially near Denali National Park, portions of the Inside Passage or Tracy Arm Fjord.

If you are looking for a more quiet experience onboard and on shore, consider cruising to Alaska in May or September. If you are looking for the months with the lowest crowds in Alaska, try for May or September. These are the "shoulder season" months, which is when the season begins and ends, and is when you will find less people vying for a cruise. There are advantages of cruising in each of the summer months, including when prices will be higher or lower.

You won’t want to miss this indescribable sight, so watch for clear night skies and set an alarm to go on deck (or on your balcony) for potential middle-of-the-night Northern Lights shows. You also might see fuzzy harbor seal pups and sea lion pups (born in June and July) warming themselves on rocks with their mothers. Add high-powered binoculars to your Alaska packing list to ensure that you get to see all of the wildlife possible. Humpback whales have yet to begin their migration to warmer waters, so you will still be able to see them, especially in early August.

best time alaska cruise

To maximize your chance of witnessing the northern lights, get off the boat and join a land excursion to Fairbanks. The aurora season in Fairbanks lasts from the end of August to April and the lights can be seen four out of five nights if the sky is clear. Here are some quick tips to help you increase the odds of seeing whales during your cruise. September also increases your wildlife sighting opportunities, as animals across the state begin migrating, foraging for hibernation and engaging in courtship rituals.

But if once-in-a-lifetime Alaska experiences like helicopter rides and flightseeing in Ketchikan are more your speed, you'll need to triple that amount -- or more. At AAA, we offer a wide selection of cruise itineraries to those explorers who want to get up close and personal with Alaskan wildlife, landscape, and culture. Down south, the waters around the southwestern and southcentral regions of Alaska teem with ships visiting Kodiak Island, the Aleutian Islands, Prince William Sound and Katmai National Park. However, it’s not necessarily a good idea to pick a cruise based solely on price.

Weather can get fairly warm in June, July, and August, which can make port days more comfortable. It’s not uncommon for the weather to be nice enough for t-shirts in the summer as opposed to the raincoats and down jackets you may have to wear in early spring or fall. The median months will see higher temperatures and longer days for touring, and it represents the limited summer that Alaska enjoys. However, July and August tend to also have higher levels of precipitation.

best time alaska cruise

After all, in addition to figuring out how to respond if you encounter a moose, you’re also worried about the weather and which month would be best to plan your trip. Additionally, June, July, and August may come with more crowds, but offer several more hours of daylight compared to in the fall. One downside to July is the price of your cruise will be higher than other months of the year. It's the very peak of the Alaska cruise season, which makes July expensive.

I also know that your experience can vary widely depending on the month you choose to visit Alaska. Seas in Alaska are choppiest on Gulf of Alaska itineraries where waters are open. Alternatively, Inside Passage cruises in Alaska tend to be calmer as the waters are protected.

Best Cruise Ships in the World

is royal caribbean a good cruise line

Either of these cruise lines can be a good option for those seeking an action-packed, value-focused cruise vacation. When Icon of the Seas sets sail, it will become the world's largest, as well as Royal Caribbean's first LNG-powered ship. Royal Caribbean International's prices on newest ships are significantly higher than prices on other ships in the fleet. Cruise fares include only about half of the line's restaurants, but all onboard entertainment is included (except lunch and dinner theater shows). The line offers last minute discounts only on short (four nights or less) cruises.

BARS & CLUBS

To help you decide which one is right for you, Cruise Critic has compared Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean International on a number of criteria including fleets, destinations, pricing, dining, cabins, entertainment and more. Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean International are two of the most popular cruise lines in the United States. With itineraries that are often similar, and seemingly infinite things to do onboard both, it may seem hard to pick one. Linda says, "They [clients] also choose this cruise line for the entertainment, dining options, and the big open promenade area." Travelers are very different in terms of what they expect in a cruise experience.

Piano or small act music shows are available in virtually every bar and lounge each night. Explorethe latest travel news, advice, updates, upcoming exclusive deals and more. Susan Young is a travel and lifestyles freelance writer, currently creating for TravelPulse.com. But it’s important to set realistic expectations, both for yourself and with the people you’re traveling with. If you’re not careful, you could go the whole length of the cruise without a single quiet moment alone. Not setting aside any time alone can be the most exhausting part of a cruise, especially for those of us who are introverts.

Princess vs. Royal Caribbean: Meet the cruise lines

Like Windjammer, the menu highlights delicacies from every corner of the globe — many of which rotate from one night to the next. When it comes to Royal Caribbean cruises, the newer ships tend to be the most fun, since they offer such cool activities. Royal Caribbean just keeps innovating and pushing the limits by adding new and exciting attractions to their cruises. However, the Wonder of the Seas, Odyssey of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, the Oasis of the Seas and the Allure of the Seas are known as some of the most fun cruise ships in the world. It seems like Royal Caribbean cruise ships keep getting bigger and bigger, just look at the incredible Icon of the Seas!

Note that Princess has limited family cabin options, including standard rooms with connecting doors, as well as family suites with full baths on select ships. Royal cruises Europe year-round, offering Baltic, Northern Europe and Mediterranean cruises out of several European ports. Some ships are stationed year-round in Australia, Central America, South America and Asia. Other exciting itineraries include Middle East, Morocco, Egypt and South Pacific journeys. That being said, if you are on a budget and are happy to stick to the included features, you’ll find plenty to do on both cruise lines. For those traveling with little ones, you will probably find more free things to do on Royal.

Passengers

One of three ships in the line's Freedom class that date to the mid-2000s, Freedom of the Seas is no longer the creme-de-la-creme of the Royal Caribbean fleet (though it was when it debuted). At around 156,000 tons, it's about 30% smaller than Royal Caribbean's newer Oasis-class ships and has fewer venues, from bars and restaurants to entertainment spaces. Sailing since January 2024, Icon of the Seas is the biggest cruise ship in the world — more than 6% bigger than the next-biggest ships in Royal Caribbean's fleet. That means greater space for the family fun zones that are a hallmark of Royal Caribbean ships, from children's clubs to water parks. What Celebrity's ships lack in thrills, they make up for with eye-catching contemporary design and cool places to hang out.

They sail Caribbean, Bahamas, Mexico and Hawaii itineraries and have one of the strongest Alaska offerings in the cruise industry. Princess Cruises' pricing follows industry standards, but sales are offered frequently. Pricing includes about one-half to one-third of the alternative eateries, depending on which Princess ship you sail on. Royal Caribbean has an edge in the Caribbean, while Princess is a top choice for Alaska and offers more itineraries in Asia, Australia & New Zealand and the South Pacific. Both offer a wide range of 7- to 10-night sailings in Europe from April through October, although Princess also offers longer 16- to 28-day itineraries in the region.

ALASKA

These shows are an amazing experience and something you will only find on Royal Caribbean cruises. Because of World Europa's design, the ship also features four balcony cabin categories with a view of its interior promenade, similar to Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class ships. Both Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises are leaders in family cruising, with passengers ranging from young parents with preschool children to multigenerational families. Both lines also attract couples and groups of friends who prefer a lively cruise ship ambience and don't mind sharing their vacation with several thousand other passengers. MSC's 12 older ships are divided among three classes — Lirica, Musica and Fantasia — and accommodate 2,000 to 3,500 guests at double occupancy. The Fantasia class's MSC Divina, launched in 2012, is perhaps best known to U.S. cruisers because it often sails itineraries to the Caribbean from Miami.

Alaska National Parks

Both Royal Caribbean and Celebrity feature adults-only, glass-enclosed Solarium pools. They also offer relaxing spas with salons, thermal suites and fitness centers for all your self-care and wellness needs. The cruise line's top accommodations are suites, varying in size and some with loft configurations.

Some children are fearless and can't sit still, while others enjoy discovering cool things about the world and making new friends as they do. By now, you've probably figured out which cruise line best suits each personality. The two-level Ultimate Family Suite — a vibrant and playful option for families with younger kids and a generous budget — is available on Wonder of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas and Spectrum of the Seas.

is royal caribbean a good cruise line

While Royal is all about jaw-dropping family-friendly features and massive ships, Princess focuses more on offering a more upscale experience. Multi-generational travel is growing in popularity with active grandparents wanting to travel, together with the kids and grandkids, in search of adventure. Norwegian Cruise Lines' 19 ships offer the perfect solution for shipboard activities and destinations to please everyone.

When Icon of the Seas debuts, it will offer many passenger favorites (Music Hall, a revamped ice arena and Playmaker's Sports Bar & Arcade) plus exciting new entertainment venues.
